Kayla is a Chihuahua mix puppy, just a tiny little thing, she weighs a mere 6 lbs. Both of Kayla's back legs are broken - that's a total of seven broken bones and surely unimaginable pain. But how did this happen? Her x-ray showed the breaks are in exactly the same place on each leg so we know she was not hit by a car. If she had been hit by a car her hips would likely have been injured as well. The vet believes that she was probably dropped from a high distance and landed on her back legs. Who could do such a cruel thing? Or was she accidentally dropped? Kayla was brought in as a stray by a concerned citizen so we may will never know the truth. What we do know is that treatment by an orthopedic surgeon is required to fix her legs. He believes she will heal nicely since she is young, only around 3 months old. The estimated cost is approximately $3,000.

Kayla deserves this surgery - and the love and safety she will have in a wonderful new home. She is now in foster care and her foster mom says she is a sweet baby who never cries. Despite the pain she must feel she still wags her tail non-stop. Help us get Kayla the medical care she needs so that she can be ready when her forever home comes along.

MCAS is in urgent need of cat fosters for thirteen beautiful cats who came in contact with ringworm. Most of these cats are long term, they have been in shelter for over sixty days waiting, hoping, looking for their forever families. These are our Purrls, some even have been there for over a year. You’ve seen their faces on our album, peering out the window as you walk past them down the hall, they have greeted you at the door and shared their love with you when you entered the room. Now they need you to help them in their most needed time. It is not fair, they are not sick nor are they suffering. They are happy, loving, sweet, normal kitties that happen to have a contagious, yet very treatable condition.

Yet, the shelter is not an environment for them to remain with risk of being infected or getting infected, they can not be adopted out while they are contagious, they can not be put back in the Volunteer Cat Playroom, and the shelter does not have the space to keep them in quarantine until it passes nor the personal to provide the needed weekly baths to help cure them of this so they can find their forever homes.

We know people hear ringworm and shudder. Please understand this is NOT a worm, it is no more then a fungal infection much like athlete’s foot. While it can be transferred to humans, being careful when handling them in the contagious stages by use of gloves reduces the risk greatly, and even if you do contract it by some rare chance, it is easily treated. All they need is a place where they will not come into contact with personal pets, someone willing to give them weekly dips in a solution to kill the fungus, someone to give them time to recover, and most of all… someone to love them enough to help them so they can finally go home!

If you can help, go to the shelter as soon as you can! The shelter vet will be there to provide treatment information.

Ok, I know we featured kittens yesterday, but seriously - we have  SO MANY KITTENS! We took in six Siamese mixes, like this little one over here, A211467. It's prime time to adopt or become an MCAS kitty foster parent. Kittens not your thing? We also have puppies and adult dogs who need foster parents. Basically, you can ALWAYS find someone to take home. :)

Za-Za at the shelter
Picassa, or Za-Za as she is affectionately called, came to the shelter with what was thought to be a dislocated hip. Either way, we knew she needed help.

Za-Za was taken to Just Cats Veterinary Services where it was discovered that she had a badly broken leg. She had endured - for who knows how long - her leg danging and folding underneath her body, hampering not only her movement, but making voiding extremely painful. This injury would have caused this stray cat to die from starvation in the wilds. Somehow she had the will to survive and ended up in the right place.

Za-Za's foster mom, Suzanne, took her in refusing to leave this sweet girl laying in a kennel. Za-Za was seen on-site by Dr. Todd Hayden, a visiting veterinarian at the shelter, and later taken to Just Cats for further investigation. Thanks to Dr. Hayden and Just Cats, Za-Za was able to have the needed surgery on her leg. The decision, due to the severity of the break, was to amputate the leg as it was not salvageable. Za-Za's surgery was completed by Dr. Kira Ramdas at Just Cats. She came through the surgery with flying colors and she was up and about the very first night.

This injury would have caused this stray cat to die from starvation in the wilds.

Having only three legs has not slowed Za-Za down one bit, she keeps up with her four-legged foster brother just fine, beating him to the food dish more times then not. She jumps with ease on the recliner to be near you, and into your bed at night to curl up by your pillow where she puts one paw on your arm, just to make sure you know she's there...or perhaps as her comfort to know you are still there.  She loves attention and to be stroked and petted, but she's not demanding about getting it, she's just comfortable to be near you.

Za-Za also is fine around dogs who leave her alone and let her do her own thing, but any who are in her face are going to be swatted.  She has lived with dogs of various ages and sizes and there is little issue as long as they are not too hyper with her. She is fine with other cats. Oh, and now is a good time to mention that Za-Za is a food hog, in a multi-cat house it will be better to feed her separated from others, both to avoid her swatting them and to monitor how much she eats. Keeping her slim and trim is very important now that she only has three legs.

After a long journey to wellness, Za-Za is finally ready for her forever home.

Za-Za is waiting to be adopted
Za-Za has been around younger children during her stay in foster also. She's fine with children and allows them to carry her around, pet her and be close to her. She does ask for their respect though and doesn't like 'rough' play.

Za-Za may look different, but different isn't such a bad thing.  In this case it's a blessing all wrapped up in a beautiful diluted marble package.  Her foster mom has fallen in love with this angel and she knows whoever chooses her for their forever furbaby will fall in love too, and be showered with purrs and love in abundance in return.

"Help me."
"I'm scared."
"Thank you for saving me."
"Take me home with you."
"Don't ever let me go."
"Just love me."

Imagine how this puppy felt when this picture was taken. The look on her face says it all. Yes, she is homeless, yes she was unwanted by her owner - but now at the shelter she will have a chance at life. She and her 7 siblings were surrendered by their owner - the result of an unwanted, unplanned litter of puppies. But with any luck she will be fostered or adopted quickly. Let's all root for her. Or better yet, can you help her? Take her home? Just love her?

Bake & Craft Sale - Saturday, May 4 at MCAS

Kudos to Brownie Girl Scout Troop 11804 for hosting a fundraiser to benefit MCAS! The girls chose this project to learn how to give back to the community. One of the lines in the Girl Scout Law is to “Make the World a Better Place” and they voted to take on this project to provide the animals with a better world to live in. The girls toured the MCAS and saw first-hand the needs of the animals. They were deeply moved and motivated by all the lonely, scared animals in need of their forever homes.

The girls and their families had a Garage Sale using their personal items to raise money for the shelter. Some of the girls also made dog treats to sell and others sold bottled water and lemonade.  The girls collected much-needed shelter donations, too, including: old blankets and towels, old newspapers, dog/cat litter, cash donations, dog/cat food and Dawn (blue) Dishwashing Detergent.

Troop 11804 presented their donation to MCAS Director and MCASociety Board Member, Minda Harris.

We would like to thank these kind and generous girls for their donations and also Troop Leader Karen Brown-Bogardus for helping to make this project possible.  Way to go Troop 11804!
